S. Fortunato

ImageSince the times of Innocenzo III, in the same place where San Fortunato Church lies, there was a church dedicated to San Fortunato, protector of the town. It probably corresponded to the Gregorian Chapel at the bottom of the right nave of the Church. The two stone lions, now at the sides of the temple, and the capital used as a holy-water font, probably belonged to this chapel.
The work for the building begun in 1292, and 17 houses had been demolished to create enough room for the church. In order to get much more money for the building , the Priors imposed new taxation, among them, the most curious one imposing to whom owned beasts of burden, to transport every year, for five years, two " some " of stones.
From 1415 to 1458 the fa?ade had been built, but it remained incomplete for economic reasons. The legend tells that Lorenzo Maitani was supposed to be the architect of San Fortunato church. Maitani had designed the Duomo of Orvieto, as well; so the people of Orvieto, fearing that the temple of Todi could overcome the beauty of their fa?ade, blinded Maitani.
ImageEach door corresponds to three naves/aisles; the main one is a pointed arch and it is rich in sculptured decors. Thirteen chapels are set into the side aisles. In the fourth chapel on the right the fresco of Masolino da Panicale, depicting the Enthroned Virgin with Child flanked by two angels, is especially noteworthy.
Wooden choir stalls cover the wall of the apse, realised in 1590 by Antonio Maffei from Gubbio.
In the crypt the sepulchral urn of San Fortunato is kept. There are kept the bones of the other protectors of the town as well ( San Callisto, San Cassiano, Santa Degna, Santa Romana). The sepulchral monument with the bones of Jacopone was wanted by Angelo Cesi, bishop of the town. On the top of the tomb Jacopone's face had been painted by Ferra? Fenzoni, the so-called Faenzone.
