Since the times
of Innocenzo III, in the same place where San Fortunato Church lies, there
was a church dedicated to San Fortunato, protector of the town. It probably
corresponded to the Gregorian Chapel at the bottom of the right nave of
the Church. The two stone lions, now at the sides of the temple, and the
capital used as a holy-water font, probably belonged to this chapel.
Each door corresponds to three naves/aisles; the main one is a pointed
arch and it is rich in sculptured decors. Thirteen chapels are set into
the side aisles. In the fourth chapel on the right the fresco of Masolino
da Panicale, depicting the Enthroned Virgin with Child flanked by two
angels, is especially noteworthy.
