The archive

ImageIts history goes back to the friars who lived in the convent of San Fortunato Church. They were asked to preserve official documents in a special container, known in Latin as armarium, closed with two keys. One key was kept by the convent guardian, the other one by the town judge. A disposition dated 30th January 1298 confirms where it was ordered to put those judiciary acts referring to the judiciary controversy involving Todi and the keeper of the Patrimony of San Pietro. Eventually Bonifacio VIII and the Bishop Matteo d'Acquasparta settled the question in favour of Todi.
From then on the Council-General chose two guardians belonging to the Corporation of Notaries ad conservandos libros , or in order to look after these documents. These people had to be of service to the Armario Superiore and the Armario Inferiore.( 1st March 1322; 29th January 1333). In 1612 Luca Alberto Petti, a famous historian, Canon of the Church of Todi, and Protonotary Apostolic, was appointed by the Priori to make the inventary. Cardinal Borghese gave a 30-scudo-fund to " ... conservatione delle scritture pubbliche .. che stanno tutte per terra e disordinate"- that is to re-order those documents.
In 1981 a slow restoration of San Fortunato church began and in 1997-1998 the new and modern seat was opened. It houses the Historical Archive of several Todi associations on a 3 km -metallic bookcase.
