Even if the initial
attempt to create a public library in Todi was dated around 1813, it was
not until 1875 that the public library was actually constituted. In fact
in this year, Lorenzo Leonj codified many prints which one belonged to
the ex convent of S. Fortunato and other libraries from other suppressed
congregations. Although, already in the year 1867 however, in order to
secure the belief that a culture was not to be a priviledge for a few
but was to be obtainable to everyone, Paolo Leli, formed with the donation
from private citizens a mobile library in the 1886 and which was latter
united to the council library . In 1920, with Giulio Pensi , the library
was transferred from S. Fortunato to the Town Hall Building where it remained
until 1995. At the end of reconstruction and restoration works of S. Fortunato
complex, from 23rd. May 2000 the library has returned to its initial place
of origin. Around 34.000 pieces can be viewed with pieces dated back as
far as X century.
