It is the highest part of
the town( 411 m. on the sea level). The Pope Gregorio IX built it to strengthen
his power over the citizens in 1373. The monastery of San Leucio and some
private houses were demolished to obtain enough room. Then in 1503 Ludovico
degli Atti demolished it and now only the Mastio, the big circular tower,
and the remains of fortification works dominate the valley.
