In 1868 a town council debate
decided to build a new theatre, designed by the architect Carlo Grotteschi.
Some private buildings were demolished in order to enlarge Via Mazzini
and to build Piazza Jacopone. In 1872 the theatre was finished and in
1876 "Un ballo in maschera", Verdi's opera, was performed on
the occasion of the centenary of Madonna del Campione. Later the painter
Annibale Brugnoli painted the beautiful curtain depicting Ludovico Ariosto's
visit to Todi.
