The second floor
of Palazzi Comunali houses the Picture Gallery and the Town Museum. The
visit starts from the Town museum: the first section deals with the memory
of the town history. It decsribes Todi events through objects and materials,
chronologically disposed starting from its legendary origins up to the
Risorgimento.
Especially worthy of notice are the marble plate depicting San Fortunato,
Jesus Christ, the Redemptor, San Cassiano, the wooden model of Santa Maria
della Consolazione dating back to 1571, work of Ventura Vitoni, and Anita
Garibaldi's saddle. Then follow the five sections:
ARCHAEOLOGY, the town with the closest commercial and cultural links with
Todi was Volsinii-Orvieto. There is documentary evidence of this in Attic
ceramics with red and black images, everyday pottery, objects for personal
ornamentation, and a number of architectonic terrecottas, among them the
antefixes with women heads are especially noteworthy for their original
colours.
Bronze votive statuettes represent one of the most widespread forms of
ancient artistic craftmanship.
NUMISMATICS, the Numismatic section consists of 1475 coins of pre-Roman,
Greek, Roman, Gothic, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern era. The most important
collection is represented by the specimens issued by the mint of Tuder(
130 pieces)
In the third section SACRED CLOTHES and CRAFT OBJECT are exhibited. They
come from different ages and areas.
The fourth section is dedicated to CERAMICS and is made up of everyday-use
pottery ranging from the 8th to the 18th century. The room housing this
section is worth notice. It was decorated in different times from 1600
to 1900. Pier Paolo Sensini enhanced the room with famous people 's portraits
and with a fresco representing Todi and its environs. Then Ignazio Mei,
a Fabriano painter, represented the legend of the town foundation and
the entrance of Emperor Traiano, who was thought to be from Todi.
The PICTURE GALLERY deals with the presence in Todi of the painter Giovanni
di Pietro, named Lo Spagna. He was one of the most important followers
of the school of the Umbrian painter Il Perugino. Here one can admire
the painting the Crowning of the Virgin Mary. Another section deals with
the works of Ferra? Faenzone, a northern Italian painter, who had
taken part in various decorative projects commissioned in Rome by Pope
Sixtus V. Angelo Cesi called him to decorate the episcopal palace. Andrea
Polinori's paintings are displayed to cover his life's works.( Todi, 1586-1648)
