Going out from Porta Romana, you can
find the Temple of the Santissimo Crocefisso. There a little Majesty lay
with the image of the Saint Crucifix, dating back to the end of the 14th
century. This Majesty was known as delle Forche, or "of the gallows"
because just few steps from there gallows were set for death sentence.
The devotion towards this fresco was so wide that the Priors of the Commune
deliberated the removal of such instruments in 1587. The favours due to
the image of Saint Crucifix drew many and many pilgrims to/ at that place.
The alms were used to finance the building of a monumental temple. In
1591 Angelo Cesi lay the foundation stone. The original project providing
a circular plan was abandoned. A Greek cross was then built, surmounted
by a tambour and covered by a round roof where a central lantern lies.
